Hey, at least the game was competitive and it kept the fans from really bringing down the house. The Eagles 30-22 loss to the Panthers on Monday night could have been uglier than it turned out to be. The Birds had a half time lead and actually moved the ball on offense thanks to a pair of rookies. But rookies giveth and they taketh away. First year player Bryce Brown ran 19 times for a Birds rookie record of 178 yards and two touchdowns. Unfortunately he also fumbled it away twice in the third quarter. Nick Foles completed a tidy 16 for 21 passing. It did amount to just 119 yards however. The O-line still had problems but they looked better than they had in over a month. The defense was another story.


The Birds gave up thirty points or more for the fourth time in the last five games. Coming in, no one would have labeled the Panthers offense a juggernaut. It wasn't so much the number that they scored as it was the ease with which they scored on several plays. Blatant coverage breakdowns with receivers running all alone into the end zone did bring the boos reigning down at the Linc, as well they should have. The Eagles secondary is a flat out mess right now. Hate to say it but they miss Asante Samuel. He at least would get a pick every once in a while. This team has only seven interceptions all year. Remember that they got four of them in week one against Browns rookie QB Brandon Weedon. With as often as the Eagles turn it over, it is a recipe for disaster. A 3-8 disaster!!


This week's drama will surround the QB position. Michael Vick may be declared eligible to return from the concussion he suffered against the Cowboys. Andy Reid has stated that he still looks at Vick as his starting QB. It is something he can surely do an about face on. He has to. The season is over. Even if the Birds go 5-0 to finish the year (yeah right!) they finish 8-8 which Jeff Lurie told us isn't good enough. The Eagles need to decide if Nick Foles is good enough to go into next season as their starting quarterback. That question has yet to be answered off what we've seen in this two and a half game look we've gotten at Foles. Sorry Mike but your health is irrelevant to the future of this organization and the future is all that matters since the present is as ugly as it is!!


More new news means more bad news for Andrew Bynum with the Sixers. He is now out "indefinitely". While it cannot be viewed as good news, there can be an upside. If his teammates, consciously or subconsciously, are waiting with bated breath for his return, they are not doing everything they can to meld as a unit without him. Now they are forced to do so. If, and I mean IF, he returns it should be look at as icing on the cake. It will take work and juggling from both players and Coach Collins but they should be up to the task. Prepare for the worst, no Bynum, and be pleasantly surprised if he does come back this year.


There has been some media and fan speculation with the latest Bynum health setback that the Sixers knew how badly Bynum was hurt and weren't scared if from it because of what the deal did for them, even assuming Bynum couldn't play. The fact that it was a major PR win during an off-season where they were very motivated to sell tickets, season and single game. Plus they were ending the Andre Iguodala era and turning an organizational page. If these suppositions are accurate, which I believe they are not, the Sixers would be crazy. How many tickets do you think they actually sold because of Bynum? Enough to pay for Bynum's $16 million dollar plus salary ? Not to mention the near six million dollar salary Jason Richardson brought with him. The dollars don't add up. If they were desperate to move on from Iguodala they could have gotten something in exchange that could have helped them win this year, and if they put Nik Vucevic and Moe Harkless into the deal as they did to get Bynum, I believe they could have landed a player or players with expiring contracts to keep the salary cap flexibility they gained in the mega-deal they did make.


Bynum was a risk and the Sixers knew it. Till this time they have rolled nothing but craps with him. But they still have plenty of stake behind the line. They can't go complete bust because even if Bynum never plays a game in a Sixer uniform, they will clear his cap space for next year and they will be able to put close to a max offer out for their free agent of choice next year. Al Jefferson is a legit center who will probably make it to free agency. He is not as young or as good a scorer as Bynum is but he does score and board and he is NOT injury prone.


This is all speculation at this time. It is still only November and there is still plenty of NBA season to yet be played. Bynum may actually be motivated to get out on the floor sometime after the first of the year. We just have to let this situation play itself out. In the meantime the Sixers have to go out and play and let the pins fall where they may!!
