On a day in which the NFL was playing there Conference Championships there was also another important game going on down at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It was a possible preview of the Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Bruins and the Philadelphia Flyers. The defending Stanley Cup Champions have had the Philadelphia Flyers number this year. This was a very exciting game but in the end the Boston Bruins beat the Flyers 6-5 in a shootout.
The Flyers all season long have been fighting the injury bug and it continued in this game against the Bruins. The team was shorthanded and played against the defending Stanley Cup Champions with eight rookie players in the lineup.
Scott Hartnell had one of his better games of his career. He had his sixth career hat trick and continued his All Star season. The Flyers did take away a very important point in the standings in what was a very entertaining game. Scott Hartnell has 25 goals on the season including 13 on the power play which happens to lead the NHL. Hartnell who had two goals on Saturday against the New Jersey Devils in a Flyers win. This was Scott Hartnell's first consecutive games with multiple goals.
The Flyers did overcome a 3-1 deficit in the second period and Scott Hartnell was the man in the period. Hartnell scored all three of the goals in the period and bringing the Flyers back. Flyers rookie player Brayden Schenn along with the other rookie players in the lineup played very well. They played very physical hockey and did not show their inexperience at all.
The Boston Bruins scored on both of their shootout attempts which included the game winner by Tyler Seguin. For the Flyers in the shootout, Matt Read and Wayne Simmonds missed on their attempts while Claude Giroux scored on his. The Philadelphia Flyers are 0-3 this season in shootouts and historically the Flyers have been very bad in shootouts.
The Flyers were ahead 4-3 and the Bruins tied the game on David Krejci's goal with 1 minute, 19 seconds left into the third period. They then took a 5-4 lead as Daniel Paille's goal with 15:01 left in the game. The Flyers Max Talbot tied if for the Flyers scoring his second goal of the game.
The Flyers did play with a lot of energy but again the goaltending situation is a problem. Ilya Bryzgalov needs to step up his play and show everyone why he was signed during the offseason for a big contract. This is becoming a major problem and it seems like it will be a problem for the rest of the season. The Flyers are not going to be able to afford to give up six goals in a playoff game. The Flyers must also play better at home. They need to utilize home ice advantage. Also the injuries are going to be a factor as well. The team needs to be healthy going into the playoffs. The Flyers could be very well one and done or they can advance very far in the playoffs but this team needs to answer these concerns. What will happen well lets just see as this season goes into the last quarter of the season.
