THE ROAD TRIP CONTINUES WITH THE RETURN OF GIROUX
By: George Remaily
The Philadelphia Flyers continue their current road trip on Friday night when they visit New York City and Madison Square Garden and take on their division rival the New York Rangers, the same team they will face in just ten days when the Flyers return home. They will be taken on the Rangers on January 2, 2012 at Citizens Bank Park in the annual NHL Winter Classic.
The Flyers go into New York City on Friday night with their horse coming off a great night and looking like he did not lose a beat after being out of the lineup for 11 days. The Flyers on Wednesday night saw the return to the ice of Claude Giroux after missing action due to a concussion.
Giroux returned to action Wednesday night and helped the Flyers defeat the Dallas Stars in Dallas 4-1. He was no doubt a huge spark plug to the lineup forthe team. He looked like he did not miss any action at all. He was no doubt the best player on the ice for either team.
Giroux had four points in the game. He had one goal and three assists for the Flyers. He regained the scoring lead in the NHL with his performance last night.
The team is currently on a five game road trip and it got off to a bad start Monday night in Denver where the Flyers lost to the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in a shootout. The Flyers came out flying in Monday nights game against the Avalanche and did not get on the score board and the first period ended scoreless. In the second period the Flyers Scott Hartnell scored and the Flyers were on top 1-0. The Avalanche tied the game in the second period on a goal by Landoskog and it was 1-1. Than just 43 seconds later the Avalanche took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Galiardi. In the third period the Avalanche went on a defensive lock and tried to hold on to their lead and they just about did. The Flyers pulled goalie Bryzgalov and with 20 seconds left in the third period the Flyers Danny Briere tied the game at 2-2 and the game went to overtime where both teams could not score and the Flyers lost in the shot out.
Wednesday night the Flyers went to Dallas to take on the Stars and Claude Giroux returned to the Flyers lineup. In the game the power play woke up. Going into the game the power play was one for its last 17 attempts. The Flyers went 2 for 5 and a lot had to do with Claude Giroux back in the lineup.
The Stars got on the scoring sheet first in the game. Just :56 seconds into the game, Michael Ryder scored making it 1-0. The Flyers tied the game in the first period at the 8:30 mark on a goal by Giroux. The Flyers scored on a power play goal in the first period by Wayne Simmonds putting the Flyers on top 2-1. The Flyers made it 3-1on a goal from Jaromir Jagr on a power play goal. Jagr’s goal was his 657th goal of his career to move him past Brendan Shanahan for 11th place all time. The Flyers scored their last goal in the third period at the 5:24mark on a Meszaros goal.
With the win last night by the Flyers they took sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference Standings. Last nights win marked the 13th win in 18 road games for the Flyers. The team has three more games left on this current five game road trip with games in New York against the Rangers Friday Night. Tuesday night in Tampa Bay against the Lightning and then into Pittsburgh against the cross state rival Penguins to close out the trip.
The Flyers hope to send a message to the Rangers on Friday which should make the rematch in ten days in the Winter Classic very interesting. The Flyers do have to feel good that they have one of the top scorers in the NHL back in their lineup in Giroux. He is an extremely important part of their team. It is good to have him back and healthy.
