The Philadelphia Flyers have gotten this short current post Thanksgiving
break road trip off to a 2-0 start. Friday in Anaheim the Flyers won in
overtime 4-3 after trailing 3-0 in the second period and getting off to a slow
start. Now Saturday’s nights game in Phoenix against the Coyotes the Flyers
got off to a quick 4-0 start in the first perioed and won the game 4-2. The
Flyers will finish this road trip on Wednesday night against the Sabres in Buffalo.

The Flyers will return home on Thursday night and will be taken on Sidney
Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The five day break during Thanksgiving
no doubt rejuvenated the Flyers energy and play, which will be very important
as the team plays with out its team captain Chris Pronger for the next month and a half.

In Friday nights game against the Anaheim Ducks the Flyers really struggled
in the first period and really looked like a team that had not played in five days. It did look like the team was just getting its legs because as the game continued the Flyers play got stronger and stronger. The Flyers were playing with seven rookie players in their lineup due to all the injuries they had. It also marked the return of Jamir Jagr to the lineup as well after missing games due to injury. Jagr came back at the right time. Jagr got the Flyers on the scoreboard on a power-play goal in the second period which cut the Ducks lead to 3-1 and the Flyers appeared to have woken up from that point on in the game. In the third period the Flyers were on a 5 on 3 power play, Jagr scored with 15:14 left in the third period and it made the score 3-2 Ducks. The goal was Jagr’s 654th career goal in his career putting him just two away from Brendan Shanahan for 11th place all time.

The Flyers Scott Hartnell put the game in overtime and Claude Giroux scored the game winning goal as the Flyers overcame a 3-0 deficit in the second period and finished the comeback and stunned the Anaheim Ducks 4-3. The team got better and better as the game went on. They appeared to have more energy than the Ducks in the third period and overtime.

The Flyers on Saturday night played in Phoenix against the Coyotes and the team came out in flying fashion going up 4-0 in the first period. The team took it right to the Coyotes right away. Rookie winger Matt Read opened the scoring in the first period and put the Flyers up 1-0. Read has 10 goals in 22 games for the Flyers. Just two minutes later Wayne Simmonds made it 2-0 Flyers. Later in the first period Claude Giroux and Scott Hartnell made it 4-0. The Flyers coasted the rest of the way and beat the Coyotes 4-2.

The Flyers are currently the highest scoring team in the NHL this season and they raised their road record this year to 9-3-1, best in the NHL. The Flyers power play has also finally woken up as well. Friday night they were 3 for 9 and Saturday night 2 for 3 on the power play. The power play had been struggling lately and it needed to wake up. The team also wanted to get off to a fast start in the opening period and they did that on Saturday night. In the past six first periods coming into Saturday’s contest against Phoenix the Flyers had been outscored 11-2 in first periods.

The goaltending was excellent as well as Ilya Bryzgalov returned to Phoenix for the first time since signing with the Flyers this off season. He played well and looked very sharp, stopping 36 shots by the Coyotes. Bryzgalov started back to back nights for the first time all this season. This is a important position for the Flyers if they want to be successful in the playoffs. The Flyers signed Bryzgalov this year to be that big time goaltender.

The Flyers on Wednesday night end this short road trip in Buffalo against the Sabres. The Flyers want to end this road trip at 3-0. They do have a huge game Thursday night at home against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers do not want to be looking ahead. They need to take each game one at a time. They need to keep the momentum going and they need to play a complete 60 minute game.

The Flyers have definitely come out of this mini break during Thanksgiving
with a lot of energy and drive in their game. This break no doubt helped this
team with their injuries and a little rest. It is important that they continue to
play well and get as many points without their captain in the lineup. The
veteran leadership in these two games have definitely picked up their play
and they will need to continue to do that. This break was the best thing for this team. The run to the all star break continues and this team needs to improve and get more excellent play from the younger players. So far so good.

The Flyers come back home on Thursday night against the Pittsburgh
Penguins. This also marks Sidney Crosby’s first appearance in Philadelphia
this year since coming back from almost a year with his concussion symptoms.
The Flyers hope to get a good home welcome from the fans. This game will
have playoff feel to it. The Flyers definitely want to set a tone with the Penguins by letting them know that the Flyers are the team to beat in the division. They need to continue the excellent hockey they have played thus far especially
since coming back from this short break. The Flyers need to set the tone early against the Penguins. This is the key to all the Flyers game coming up. They will need to set the early tone and keep the power play going. The huge key will be the goaltending and Thursday Bryzgalov will need to be sharp. The Flyers will definitely will show everyone if they are the team to beat on Thursday. A big early season game. What will they bring to the table. Lets see. Hopefully it will be what the fans expect from there Philadelphia Flyers. Excellent play and a complete effort. This will be important for any success the Flyers want to have this season. That success is the taste of Lord’s Stanley Cup and a parade down Broad Street in June.
