The Philadelphia Phillies clinched a playoff spot Wednesday afternoon. It is their fifth straight year that they will be making an appearance. They still have half the month of September to play. Yes they still have to clinch the division but should they be resting players?

The Phillies have had their share of injuries all season. A lot of these injuries have come to them in the last couple of weeks. Also they have occurred to their everyday players, ones that will be needed during October. They are starting to come back but should they be resting and have their strength to go for the post season?

Chase Utley has been out with a concussion. He did not make the road trip to Milwaukee or Houston. He is supposed to start the second game against the Florida Marlins. Although he is cleared to be playing should he be? Sure he will taking precautions and he needs at bats but Chase is a bat the Phillies need during the post season along with defensively. In the post season Chase has an average of .243. This includes 24 RBI with 10 homeruns. These are numbers that do not want to be lost. The Phillies have their playoff spot, don’t over work or use players.

Ryan Howard is another number provider. In his post season career he has an average of .278. His average includes 27 RBI with 7 homeruns. Ryan has been going through the season with bursitis. It is bothering him in his left heel. He has been playing most games. He should be resting it that way he is ready to go for more meaningful games although these games are still important.

Jimmy Rollins has spent time on the disabled list and recently just came off. Charlie took his time with putting Jimmy back into the lineup and is still iffy about when to use him. This is how he should be about Utley and Howard. Once the division is clinched hopefully Charlie will be more relaxed.

The Phillies are on their way to try and win the World Series. For that to happen the Phillies need to be as healthy as they can be. Hopefully Charlie Manuel is smart and doesn’t play these guys too much and they get hurt even more. However, the Phillies can get through anything no matter what issue comes to them. October cannot come soon enough!
