Walking into the Harrah’s room you never would have known that the room was being transformed the night before. The ring was done being built and was just making last minute adjustments such as testing the ropes for bounciness and tightening them. There were bright lights over the ring. Cameras were ready to roll. The room was ready to go for a boxing match.
It was also fan friendly. There were food and drink vendors set up throughout the room so the fans didn’t have to leave. Although you were allowed to leave with easy access to get back in as you were giving a wrist band so you didn’t feel like you were stuck inside. Fans were also able to move around and stand so they could get a better view of what was going on in the ring. It was a very relaxed environment. It seemed to be an equal turnout between men and women and there were some kids thrown into the mix. The room filled up completely making it a really good turnout and atmosphere once the fights began.
The night started out with an expedition match. The contenders were two young women Melissa Hernandez and Ronica Jeffrey. It was a very relaxed match since it was an expedition. It was only three rounds, each round being two minutes. They were laughing and seemed friendly. There was only one coach between the two of them. In expeditions they don’t decide a winner. Although it was cool to see women box because it shows that it isn’t only a man’s sport. These girls were tough and deserve a lot of credit for doing what they do.
Next was the first completive fight of the night. It was the heavy weight match up Tony Ferrante vs. William Prieto. Prieto came out with black shorts. Ferrante came out with red, white, and green shorts. With Tony being from Philadelphia he was clearly the fan favorite. Everyone was pumped up cheering his name and getting into the fight, making it a great atmosphere. In round one Tony seemed to be dominating. He knocked down Prieto but he was able to get back up. They stayed to the sides of the ring. There was a lot of holding of each other. It also seemed to be that Prieto was hurting or something of that nature. That was the end of the round and when the beginning of round two was about to begin Prieto said that he couldn’t go on. The referee got the judges ‘decision and Tony Ferrante had won his third match in a row.
Before the next two completive fights there was two more expedition. One was Joey Dawejko. He was supposed to fight in a competitive fight but something had happened and his opponent had to drop out. He didn’t want to let his fans down since so many people had come to watch his fight. It shows that he cares a lot about his fans and did not want to let them down with disappointment. It was a cool thing to see.
Next was one of the main events. Angel Ocasio vs. Rasool Shakoor in a light weight match up. Angel was trying to remain undefeated in his first six round match. Angel came out in his red and white shorts. He is a fan favorite as he is from Philadelphia. Shakoor came out with his black shorts with a red stripe. Angel came out swinging right away. In round two Angel kept up the dominance and it really looked like he was going to get a knock out. He continued this through rounds three and four. In round five it seemed to get more even between the two but then near the end of the round Angel finished strong. The arena started to get very loud cheering for Angel and people began to stand up. In the final round the arena was rocking. Angel was jumping around and so close to a knock out. It didn’t happen but it was close. He won the match and remains undefeated. He is one of the younger guys and without a doubt will be going far in his career.
Finally came the main event, Victor Vasquez vs. Angel Rios. This was for the BAM Championship. The winner would get a belt and all. Rios came out in black shorts and a gray stripe. Victor came out with blue shorts and a sliver stripe. This is the match where Rios was three pounds overweight and was fighting 1 ½ pounds over the weight limit. This is the match that fully got the crowd cheering. The whole crowd was into the match.
In the beginning rounds it was slow paced and there was an even amount of punches thrown. There was also an even amount of holding. In round three the punches heated up but then they got defensive again just standing there waiting for each other to make the next move. It was such an even match. It was so back and forth. There was no one person who was dominating. In round six both got fired up with their energy flying. That continued in round seven with punches flying back and forth. In round eight the final round they were a little bit more defensive but in the final seconds punches were coming left and right from both fighters. It was exciting to watch. When it came to the judges’ score it was a close call. One said it was dead even, while one had Victor win by two points making Victor the winner and claiming the belt.
Overall the event was a success. The fights were exciting to watch and you didn’t know what was going to happen. They were exciting and awesome to experience. Next event that comes around check it out!
