When the 2010-11 NBA season began, most people assumed the Philadelphia 76ers would be preparing for the draft lottery by the time the postseason got underway. They were coming off a nightmarish 27-55 campaign and didn't figure to be any better this season. But after a 3-13 start, the Sixers regrouped under head coach Doug Collins to finish 41-41 and earn the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference playoff race
This will be the third playoff appearance in the last four seasons for the Sixers, with each coming under a different coach, as Maurice Cheeks guided them to the postseason in 2008 and Tony DiLeo (who took over after Cheeks was fired early in the 2008-09 campaign) did the same a year later. In both years the Sixers were ousted in the first round. They won Games 1 and 3 against the Detroit Pistons in 2008 before falling in six games, and the exact same scenario took place against the eventual Eastern Conference Champion Orlando Magic in 2009. The Sixers have not advanced beyond the first round of the playoffs since 2003, when they defeated the New Orleans Hornets in six games in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals before falling to the Pistons in six in the conference semifnals
If the Sixers are to emerge victorious in the first round of this year's playoffs, they'll have to pull off a monumental upset of the Miami Heat. No team was under a bigger microscope this season than the Heat, who signed LeBron James and Chris Bosh as free agents while retaining Dwyane Wade. The regular season had its ups and downs, but the Heat appeared to hit their stride late, finishing 58-24 and for the moment silencing talk of head coach Erik Spoelstra's job security. Miami has not won a playoff series since defeating the Dallas Mavericks in the 2006 NBA Finals. They suffered first round defeats at the hands of the Chicago Bulls (4-0), Atlanta Hawks (4-3), and Boston Celtics (4-1) in 2007, 2009, and 2010 respectively
The Heat swept the regular season series from the Sixers this season. The only meeting in Philadelphia came in what was the season opener for the Sixers (it was Miami's second game) on October 27. Up by eight at the half, the Heat broke the game open by outscoring the Sixers 31-13 in the third quarter. Their lead would swell to 28 before a late Sixers run made the 97-87 final score look a little closer than the game actually was...The second meeting of the season came in Miami on November 26. The Sixers hung tough in this one, but the Heat were able to pull away late for a 99-90 victory. The loss dropped the Sixers to 3-13 on the season, but they would go 38-28 from that point on...The teams last met on March 25, again in Miami. The Sixers held the lead for the majority of this one, but were undone by two big Heat runs. The first one was a 21-2 uprising before halftime after the Sixers had built up a 42-26 lead in the second quarter. The Sixers were able to recover from that and take an 88-80 lead in the fourth quarter, but a 21-4 Miami sprint proved too much to overcome and the Heat would prevail by a score of 111-99...The Heat were the only Eastern Conference opponent the Sixers did not register at least one victory against this season. The two teams have never met in the postseason
